Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 6th graders are some of the most eager, ambitious, and dedicated students you’ll ever meet! Our school is located in Spanish Harlem, NYC, a culturally rich and exciting neighborhood.
Due to issues beyond our control, the number of students in our classrooms has been soaring - 35 sixth-grade students in one room can be tight and stressful.
Having a relaxing, private area for students to read, write, and collaborate will help them see our classroom as an engaging place where they can not only learn, but also develop independence!
My Project
6th graders are in a crucial transitional stage as they enter middle school. They crave independence, while still seeking the comfort, guidance, and support of the adults around them. I want our classroom to be an educational, yet fun and safe space for them. Our small group meetings and learning sessions provide more face-to-face time with my students, in a more relaxed and exciting setting for them - so why not leave the chairs and desks behind?! These bean bag chairs and the carpet will help to create a cozy nook where the students can meet with me for a quick lesson, or alone in their book clubs to help develop responsibility and accountability.
