I am a teacher in a unique elementary school in rural Amish Country, Ohio. We are a kindergarten-sixth grade building. Many of my students are English language learners and only speak English at school. They go home to their families where they speak Dutch. We are faced with many challenges both at home and at school. Many of our families live on small family farms with no electricity. Family is a very important part of our community and school! Our school family is amazing!
Reading is valued immensely in our community and is typically the nightly form of entertainment.
I meet with small groups of students for 30 minutes. My groups consist of one to six students. This small group setting and environment provides opportunities for continued learning and support to our students. I love being a Title I teacher who gets to work with a variety of students on a daily basis to help foster their love of reading.
My Project
Providing additional support to readers is a daily occurrence. In small groups, we read hundreds of books and articles a year.
Using Chromebooks in these small groups will allow students access to a wide range of resources electronically while saving time, money, and paper.
Students will be able to access reading content and respond to questions instantly all on the same device. Students will be able to work cooperatively on projects as well as individually.
Students will now have access to daily current events, written for kids on a level that is attainable for them. They can respond to these readings in a variety of ways. Short quizzes containing multiply choice questions as well as short answer or extended response questions.
Chromebooks will aid in preparing them for the high demands of technology they will face in everyday life.
