Hello! I am a 4th-grade English-Language Arts teacher in an underserved New Jersey school district. Our students struggle in reading, and therefore many instructional practices are employed to meet their various needs. Our students are diverse culturally and economically.
In order to meet the needs of all students, small group instruction is a must.
Every day my students learn essential reading concepts through collaboration and small group instruction. Students learn in many different ways, and each student has their own set of learning challenges.
As a reading teacher, I meet with 6 small groups consisting of 3-4 students for 20 minutes each on a daily basis. During this time I am working with students to improve their reading deficiencies. Currently, I use a small oblong-shaped table to conduct small group instruction. This makes it difficult to meet the needs of all of my students. It is also uncomfortable for students to have me reaching over them, or squeezing in between them to work with a classmate.
Having a kidney-shaped table will encourage group work and allow me to monitor students with ease.
This type of seating encourages collaboration and teamwork during small group instruction. It will also allow me to check in one-on-one with students. There will also be a comfortable amount of space between each student which alleviates distractions. Adding a kidney-shaped table to my classroom will increase student engagement across instructional activities.
