My Students

Up until the early 1990s, children of sugar plantation workers comprised the greater majority of our enrollment, with Filipinos being the last major group to migrate as plantation workers. With remaining plantation families and new housing developments, we have become a more diverse community. The families at our school tend to live in houses that are multi-family and multi-generational. There are a lot of rich traditions and history that the students bring to our school.

There are a lot of challenges our students face.

About 41% of our families speak languages other than English at home. Most parents have to drive long commutes to work which can add to the family's challenges. In about 30% of our families, the grandparents are responsible for the grandchildren or the family is single-parent led. About 55% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches.

Despite all the challenges that they face, the students show up to school eager to learn and work hard. I want to give them the opportunity to have fun learning and show them that they can achieve anything they want to if they put their mind and heart to it.

My Project

Collaboration and group work is an integral part of our daily learning. Since the pandemic, they have lost the opportunity to work in small groups. Learning to work together in groups is an important part of becoming a successful student and citizen in the world.

Allowing students to learn in a small group with hands-on materials keeps them engaged.

The puzzles, games, and other materials will help the students with learning to read and write in a more engaging way. Also in this project, is a library set of diverse books to read aloud to the class.
