Challenge. My classroom consists of an eclectic group of 30 fourth grade students. These students vary in proficiency levels and come from various socioeconomic groups.
My students are exciting to teach because of the challenge it requires to help them achieve growth.
These students enjoy reaching beyond our regular curriculum and creating deeper understanding in our instruction. As an educator this is equally as important as helping a struggling student or incorporating ESL strategies for my non-native speaking students. I'm excited to challenge, support, and achieve growth for my students individually and collectively this school year.
My Project
Do you remember what it felt like picking up an old, warn out, or outdated book? My students are in need of sets of small group books that are new, engaging, and relate to their varied interests. Our small group selection currently contains titles of books that may have been "old" when I was in the fourth grade classroom. While many of those titles are still interesting, it is important that my students are being introduced to new literature and genres that excite them. I am asking for seven copies of twelve different books including Dog Man, Invisible Emmie and Crenshaw.
I have selected a variety of books that include realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, and even graphic novels that would thrill my fourth grade readers.
I love to use novels in my classroom to teach our common core skills, but also bring stories to life for our young readers. These books take the place of the boring basal readers and place real books into my students' hands. They are varied in reading level and subject. These books will be used for instruction in reading, language arts, and even life skills with the fourth grade classroom setting.
Fourth graders are often beginning to transition into young adult literature that creates lasting memories. I vividly remember the stories my elementary teachers shared with me. My hope is that through these novels my students are able to be drawn in by new titles, high interest, and award winning books.
