Thinking back to your school days, what are your favorite memories? I'm sure most include when you were allowed to work with your friends. My students' favorite part each day is when I am able to work with them in small groups for reading, math, and other subjects.
My students live in Lisbon, which is a small farming community.
My students are amazing at working hard and always doing their best. They also excel at helping each other and being encouragers. Our school is a K-8 building with just over one-hundred students. We are a very close-knit group and our staff loves working together. We are always on the look out for new, engaging teaching methods and resources for our students.
My Project
In our classroom, each student has a desk. I also have another little table to work with small groups of students. I believe small groups are so important in first grade. With the students just beginning to read, small groups allow me to hear each child and see how I can help them improve their skills. Right now, only two students fit comfortably at our little table. I usually have between 4-6, so the other students bring their chairs over or just stand around the table. We need a bigger table to accommodate more students at a time. The students love coming over and working together at the "friends table." We also need more room at our table so students can lay their books out, write comfortably, and gather around so I can monitor each student.
With this table, we will be enabling many first-graders to improve their reading skills and math skills immeasurably.
I am so excited to see what each one will be when they grow up. I have noticed the better a child performs in reading and math, the more excited they are about their future and confident of their skills. Thank you for pouring into their lives!
