Small But Effective Rewards

Help me give my students incentives for reading and completing work. I am always amazed at the enthusiasm small rewards can be for students.

My Project

It always amazes me at how effective small rewards can be. Last year I added these small animal erasers and accessories to my classroom as rewards. My students needed a little extra to motivate them to reach their reading and math goals. For every Accelerated Reader test and math fact test they completed successfully they got to pick a new friend to sit on the corner of their desk, or an accessory, such as food or a tiny toy. This year students have read more books than any other and I do not have to nag them to keep up on their math fact practice. They have been so inspired that my supply is greatly depleted.

Students embrace these small incentives with some even building tiny houses for their growing family of desk pets, the miniature animals becoming symbols of their continuing success.
