"Awww, they're so cute!" This was the exclamation of 5 classes of Agriculture students who witnessed the hatching of chicks for the first time. Some of the students who never seem interested in the "animal thing" finally showed enthusiasm for the subject.
Our school has students in grades 6-12 and provides challenging academics, enthusiastic teachers and a variety of electives for students to take from choir to agriculture courses.
Our goal is to prepare our students for success in college, and our community is highly involved to help our school and students succeed.
The Agriculture Department has been neglected for years, and we have gone from a half-time teaching position and 40 enrolled students to a full-time teaching position and over 80 students in the Agriculture classes. The students has varying backgrounds and knowledge in agricultural subjects, each one bringing a different tone to the class. This year, the students have brought more passion and interest into the classes and have shown a promise of success to the future of this department.
My Project
The small animal lab is an advancement of our Agriculture Department. A movable dry erase board and various lab animal supplies will enable the students to learn about the care and health of animals through lab activities.
The supplies will be used to allow animals to be kept in the lab to study animal care practices, health, and genetics.
The students currently work in the classroom with various technology to understand some of the material we cover, however, the majority of our subjects should be hands-on to truly understand.
Not many of our schools in the area have the advantage of hands-on learning with live animals. The opportunity to learn with live animals and instruments/lab supplies used in today's industry would allow the students to expand their career outlook.
