What separates amateur video from professional video? What is necessary for good visual storytelling? In order to further develop the visual literacy skills of Lakeland Union High School's Media Productions and Applications students, the addition of professional equipment is essential.
Lakeland Union High School is a unique school.
Located in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin, it is actually the largest school district (geographically speaking) east of the Mississippi river. Students enrolled in Media Productions and Applications are avid filmmakers, videographers, and photographers. They are interested in making movies, videos, T.V. programs, and visual effects. The class is in the midst of its inaugural year. It was implemented to give the growing number of interested students a creative outlet and an opportunity to hone their skills.
My Project
While the students have been fortunate to use a variety of cutting-edge resources, the class frequently uses DSLR cameras. As part of the learning process, we explore the use of different lenses with the different types of DSLR cameras. Still, when filming a scene with action, the use of the DSLR cameras becomes problematic, as even with the use of lenses that have a stabilizing feature, the recorded content often appears "warped" or out of focus. Therefore, if given the opportunity to work with a glidecam (a stabilizer for DSLR cameras or video cameras), they will have the use of professional equipment that will allow them to film dynamic scenes without sacrificing quality.
This donation will directly improve the classroom by allowing students the opportunity to see the contrast of video footage shot with professional equipment as opposed to video that is not.
It will allow students to learn about the craft in depth and, in turn, will allow students to learn about all the elements involved in video production.
