Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students live in federal housing or low-income apartments near my school. My school has about 700 students and is a school-wide Title I, Provision II school, which means that 82% or more of the students are eligible to receive a free or reduced-price lunch.
Many of my students are second language learners and may be the first students in their families to attend college.
My students participate in a program that focuses on stewardship of the marine environment that is close to the school and their community.
My Project
Students will first visit Birch Aquarium for a short tour and participate in marine activities tailored to middle school students. The next stop will be at SeaWorld, where my students will participate in various fish and marine mammal labs, while also investigating careers in the marine sciences. They will explore behind the scenes and listen to lectures given by SeaWorld experts. To end the evening, they will camp out next to the sea turtles and giggle all night long with their friends. The next day, they will continue with a few more activities, including getting up early and feeding many of the hungry birds and sea lions. Lastly, they will have a chance to participate in a scavenger hunt while having a terrific time with their friends!
Donations will be used to send students to a marine science educational camp at SeaWorld.
The activities that they will participate in will bring together everything that my students have been learning throughout the year and since sixth grade. My students will return from this camping trip wanting to learn more about marine science and will want to continue their marine science education in high school by taking AP Marine Biology and AP Environmental Science.
