Sleeping Under the Stars

My students need first aid kits, water filters, and other supplies that will keep them safe and healthy on overnight outdoor adventures.

My Students

Do you have memories of hiking or camping when you were growing up? Do you remember cooking marshmallows and sleeping outside? I want my city kids to tell ghost stories around a fire and learn how to pitch tents!

My students travel from all over New York City to attend our small public high school.

They are very independent and most participate in after school programs throughout the city. They are artists, athletes, programmers and scientists. However, they have not yet experienced the type of freedom that comes from hiking and camping outside.

My Project

I have already partnered with the Appalachian Mountain Club to borrow equipment like hiking boots, sleeping bags and tents. With those basic supplies covered, the additional equipment I am requesting will allow us to safely take overnight trips. The kitchen equipment will allow us to cook and carry water for a small group. The books will help me prepare leadership workshops when we are outside. The safety equipment will ensure that we are protected in unforeseen circumstances.

My students are so excited about the possibility of taking camping trips together, and this equipment will allow us to do that safely.

This is the type of experience that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
