Our school district has a low socioeconomic base, and about half of the students have access to free or reduced-cost lunches. Our students come from a rural area. Some have families that offer their children many special resources such as family vacations and name brand clothes. Others come from situations that are much less financially stable.
As a talented and gifted teacher, I am trying to incorporate science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) materials to help our students be prepared for life outside of school.
Most of our buildings are one-to-one with computers to children. However, the students do not always have the hands-on resources or opportunity to explore applications and resources outside of the core classroom subjects.
My Project
We live in Iowa, yet many students spend very little time outside, especially in the winter. Having sleds to use in the winter is a great way to provide an outside activity and exercise.
These sleds provide exercise AND a way to learn about friction.
The students will time sledding runs behind our school. Based on the sled's shape and smoothness, they will predict which will be the fastest, therefore the one with the least friction.
These will be used in both the talented and gifted classes and with the middle school science club. One grant will allow many people to get outside and to learn at the same time.
