My students love to create! They are risk-takers who enjoy experimenting with different mediums and exploring different ways of creating art. They are high spirited, proud, smart and savvy.
They represent a variety of different cultures and economic backgrounds.
For many of my students, art is an escape. Art is our time to focus and express our energy towards something that we love to do. Because of the many challenges my students face, I am looking to provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences which will help them deflect from their every day struggles.
My Project
Students will create a variety of clay projects which will be used to enhance the overall appearance of our school hallways. This initiative will increase their desire to attend school by creating a sense of community throughout our student body. When people feel invested, needed, and important, they also feel a sense of responsibility to the process. Displaying a student's work gives the student a sense of pride in their work and school.
Displaying their work tells them that their time spent in school is important.
There is a large amount of absenteeism in our school, and I feel art can help decrease that number.
So far this year, 6.5% of our students are below 85% of attendance
In relation, 5.72% of our students have 2 or more Fs and 10% of our students have 2 Fs or Ds.
Studies indicate that even a small amount of success can have a broad affect on student accomplishment. As teachers, one of our main goals is to maintain student engagement. Through the revival of the clay curriculum in our school, my students will be involved in a process which their success can be controlled by their own individual efforts. The connections they will make with their artwork and their peers will result in providing incentive for them to attend school and thrive.
