This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in a rural community. We are one of the poorest elementary schools in the district. We are a Title I school of approximately 500 students. Through a government subsidized program all of my students are on free lunch and breakfast. Our attendance zone includes a domestic violence safe house, so for some students, school is the most reliable constant in their lives.
Because of the low socio-economic standing of our community our kids go without things other schools consider standard.
My Project
In my new school I have a fantastic music room with some great instruments. I was very surprised to find I don't have any decent tambourines! I have one that has a hole in the top and two that are tiny, baby tambourines. From youngest to oldest, my students love to play non-pitched rhythm instruments along with our songs. This enhances the way they audiate or integrate a rhythm in a physical way. Many of my students have tambourines they play at church and I would love to have that experience readily available to them in my classroom. Plus, any music classroom that's interactive, should have a good supply of tambourines!
