This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a 1st grade teacher in New Mexico. I work in a Title I, low income school district. I have a very diverse classroom consisting of many different ethnic backgrounds. I have students requiring special education, students who require a student assistant team, students who receive Title I reading coaching services, and students who receive Title VI Native American academic assistance. I have some ELL (English language learners) who speak Spanish at home. One hundred percent of the students in our school receive free breakfast and lunch at school.
Due to funding cuts in New Mexico, classroom teachers in my district are not receiving any money from the state and/ or district for essential resources and are personally responsible for purchasing fundamental materials and supplies to keep the classroom running.
I am very invested in these children, in a professional manner and an emotional one. I spend a substantial amount of time with my students and I want to see each and every one of them succeed.
My Project
My students are in need of a few slant boards to help with handwriting. I have students who are strong academically, but are really struggling with their handwriting. According to research and talking to an occupational therapist, I have learned that slant boards help with student handwriting and building up strength in their hands.
In the past, my school received money from the district to buy supplies and materials to be successful for the year and, sadly, this year we did not get these funds.
I am asking for donations to help make up for this lack of funds. Students will use these slant boards to help with their handwriting. I have three students who see an occupational therapist outside of school, and these slant boards are what the therapists suggested. We would greatly appreciate any donation you are able to give.
