Slammo, the Upside-down Volleyball Game That Can Be Played Anywhere!

Help me give my students a great, accessible indoor game that builds motor skills, as well as strategy and social skills!

My Project

We are an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse public learning community in north Seattle. Two-thirds of the student body qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school is a critical fixture in the community that provides so many different means of support for students and their families.

Our school serves students as young as pre-school on up through 8th grade.

Where some sports like basketball, volleyball, or badminton require students to hit a ball upward either towards a hoop or over a net, which may be inaccessible to younger students, the game of spike ball is easily accessible for students of all ages, since the game focuses on hitting a ball down onto a net, where it bounces upward. Students of most any age, stature, or level of ability can enjoy this game at any level. The game builds all sorts of motor skills such as hand-eye coordination, lateral movement, fast-twitch reflexes, overhand-throwing and striking motions, jumping, running, and allows students to engage in strategy formation. Students enjoy everything from the fast nature of the game, to the simplicity of bouncing a ball off of the net and watching it rocket upwards and outwards. Engagement in sporting activities helps build a fun and congenial learning environment. Students can be matched and partnered in ways that allow all levels of students to teach and learn from each other. Because it is more of an alternative game versus mainstream options such as basketball or football, it can be taken less seriously and is therefore more accessible to students who may not otherwise engage in mainstream sports, which allows for greater enjoyment for all students.

Spike Ball is a fixture in most school gymnasiums, but is currently missing from our supply closets. Please help us provide this fun, exciting game to kids!
