Our students come from below income families. We would like to give them some experience working with others. They come from diverse cultures and working together will help build their need for success.
Our students come from single family homes to multi-family homes.
Our students hunger for learning and these activities will enhance their education. These students come from all walks of life. Many of them come from very impoverished homes. This may be their only experience with building activities.
My Project
Students will explore with various building materials such as marble runs, magnetic blocks, gears, and other materials to complete various challenges with small groups of classmates.
They will have many experiences working together to achieve specific challenges.
Some of the challenges will be to build the highest tower, build the most complex marble run, build a working machine with gears, and construct using a wide variety of materials. Students will experience the engineering process with these materials by having several opportunities to design, create, and improve upon their creations and designs. Students will reflect on their projects and discuss ways they could improve them.
We will compare projects in the class, and with other 2nd grade classes at our school. Students will love these new building materials and will be very excited to use them. They will learn many life skills in the process, such as working together, listening to others, sharing ideas, accepting ideas from others, negotiating, and being a team player. Students will be open to ideas from others and share their own.
