Help me give my students the world with the Circletime Around the World carpet and the United States Activity carpet.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are from an under served community on the west side of Jacksonville, Florida. The school year began two weeks ago, and the students are already working hard and showing excitement as they tackle their day-to-day schoolwork. They have done so well in this short time that I have named them “the smart kids” and each day, they have lived up to that name.
Every morning they bring their free spirits, enthusiasm, and ambitions.
When asked what they want to be when they grow up, there was no hesitation: Archaeologist, ballet dancer, basketball player, dentist, policeman, etc. and one student wants to make computer games. There are eight girls and 10 boys, so far and they are all very precious diamonds.
The Skyping Around the World project is designed to give the students a global perspective. Students will “meet” a business executive (via Skype) as she is traveling in another country. The project is designed to broaden the students’ knowledge of different countries, where they are located, facts about them, and they may even meet citizens from them. The executive that the students will Skype with is based in Philadelphia. The United States map carpet will help the students gain information about where Philadelphia is, what states they must travel through to get there, etc. The Around the World Carpet will allow the students to "re-visit" the countries they “traveled” to, over-and-over again in the classroom.
On the day of the Skype, students will “go through Customs," “board an airplane” and meet the executive in the country they’re visiting (via Skype).
Once “in the country” students will see a location in real time. The executive will discuss with the students what they learned about the country prior to their "travel", provide additional information, and may even introduce them to residents of the country.
Each day, the Carpettime Around the World Carpet and United States Map Carpet will help the students relive their visits to other states and countries. The Carpets will reinforce the students’ experiences in each, and It may even stimulate their curiosity about other states and countries.
