I teach the gifted/accelerated first grade class at Oliver Wendell Holmes Elementary School in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. 95% of my school's student body is low income. Many of my students have not ventured far beyond our school's attendance area. Earlier this year, my students and I took a field trip to Chicago's Field Museum of Natural History. As our bus headed north towards downtown, the students gaped in awe of the skyscrapers we passed. That gave me an idea: why not give my students a bird's eye view of their city? As part of our unit on geography, I'd like to take my students of a field trip to the John Hancock tower. I've chosen the Hancock over the Sears Tower because it has an outdoor (screened in) Skydeck and a nearby playground where we can eat lunch on the shore of Lake Michigan. This field trip will give my students a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore their city from a different angle- and a field trip they will not soon forget!
