Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This class is a science class (astronomy) for students who want to further their interest in the sciences. College requirements for technical fields are met by taking this class, and using the technology you are helping make available.

Most students are under-privileged teens in a setting where supplies and technology are very limited.

The curriculum will be made more interesting and fun with the camera and software. With these tools, students can completely change their self-perception, their opinion of science, as well as the school culture. Students will be able to experience first-hand interesting and fascinating applications of the materials taught in class.

My Project

The computers and telescope are already in the classroom. We now need the camera and the software, to learn to use the telescope with the software and take pictures of celestial objects that we have learned about in the classroom. The students will be bringing textbook topics to life, by taking and printing pictures of objects that they have researched, discovered out of the clear blue sky (or rather: clear-dark night sky). Students will gain excellent preparation for STEM careers and information technology. This is a great means to boost students' confidence about their success in technical fields.

I teach astronomy, robotics, and physics at a public school with a focus on science.

Many students have no concept of careers in science and this is a great way to open their eyes to STEM careers in an exciting hands-on manner. Students will learn to program a telescope and camera, and use it to see and image things not visible to the naked eye.
