My Students

My students love to read how-to books! This collection of how-to books includes advice on reading a work of art and a worried mom, dealing with insults, asthma, and discrimination, and directions for decorating cupcakes and talking to a dog. There is something here for everyone!

My urban middle school students, many of them English Language Learners, begin the year reading years below grade level.

We read every day in our mixed grade Language Arts classroom, as my students work hard to strengthen their skills and prepare for high school.

My Project

How-to books are a favorite of strong readers and developing readers alike. Students will jump at the chance to read these books during independent reading time in our class. This eclectic collection of how-to books includes directions on becoming an Aztec warrior or a Roman soldier, impressing a potential date or employer, and surviving disasters both natural and social. My students will consult these books to learn to tie a Windsor knot and balance a checkbook; they will find out how to frost a cupcake and what to say during a job interview. These books are chockful of useful and practical advice about all kinds of life situations.

This is a dream book collection for my students.

How-to books are always in demand during reading time in our classroom. My students will devour the lessons and wisdom in this collection---and become better readers while doing so!
