Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It's important for students, especially at the middle school age, to express themselves creatively through the arts. We use sketchbooks daily in my art studio. Whether we are warming up or creating freely, my students have always had a personal connection to their sketchbooks. Many take them home daily and bring them back next class. Not only is it a place for them to express themselves but it provides me with a window into their world. How are they feeling emotionally, are they reaching out for help? I've worked at a Title I school for 9 years now and I've seen the struggles some of my students and families face. It would be great to provide a small amount of relief by providing them with a sketchbook this year rather than asking them to buy one. I have always made sure my students do not go without and often use my own money to purchase sketchbooks but it would be such a great feeling to be able to provide ALL my students with one this coming school year.
