My students need sketchbooks to use in our Digital Media class. I have discovered that most of our students are not able to purchase these on their own.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I remember when I was in art class way back in the day. I was very fortunate though because my art classes charged a small lab fee to cover materials, and the school paid for the remainder. But these days with all the education budget cuts the art department is always the first to lose funding.
Our students are wonderful.
They are 9th graders engaging in their high school journey, they are defining themselves as academics, and on a quest to college. 75% are from low income households, they will be the first in their families to go to college, and they are culturally diverse. Already I have seen these kids overcome the challenge of not having the resources to buy the supplies they need for school. They are excited about the awesome digital media projects we will be creating, and I cannot wait to get them going.
My Project
Having these nice high quality sketchbooks will change my students lives for the better because they will get to participate in classroom sketching exercises, they won't feel embarrassed when half the class has their sketchbooks but they are doing their work in binder paper. The social and emotional well being of a young student depends on their ability to connect with the work. When they do not have the proper supplies, they can feel defeated before ever getting a chance to see what skills they have, and develop them further by persisting through challenges.
This project is important because a sketchbook can change the perception of learning for a student.
Art provides a means of expression that they often do not have in their other classes. Doing homework and taking notes in a sketchbook has a different feel. Students light up when they get to draw, sketch, design and create. Sketchbooks have the added bonus of containing containing a years worth of learning and discovery that is a very powerful means to self reflection.
