Sketchbooks for Students to Capture Their Artistic Skills & Growth
Help me give my students each their own sketchbook to use throughout the year. It will keep all of their drawing practice, project ideas and own doodling organized and show their yearly growth!
The students benefiting from this project are the entire 9-12 population of students at Parker Woods Montessori. PWM is a Cincinnati Public School, a free magnet elementary school program located in the neighborhood of Northside. Our students make up the most diverse Montessori school in our district. Our school is at over 90% economic disadvantage, our entire school qualifies for federal free lunch program. The need is great within our school community.
But my students, they are amazing!
The talent that I have seen grow within the student body is jaw-dropping. As the art teacher, I get 50 minutes a week with all students at our school from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Even in that small amount of time, watching students grow and push themselves over the entirety of last year was the best.
This year in my classroom, I am moving to a Montessori-based curriculum in the art room with my older students, where they will be able to work at their own pace and have more choice within the art classroom. I am excited to hopefully continue to engage and grow an interest in more of my students.
My Project
As a largely self-taught artist myself, I know that good art takes time, and growing skills (for anything, not just in art) takes LOTS of practice! I am looking for help to provide sketchbooks for my 4th-5th-6th grade students to nurture their drawing skills. So many of my students begin in art saying "I can't draw..." I want to give them space to practice their skills, organize their creative ideas and at the end of the year be able to look back and reflect at the growth they have shown in their abilities in just the nine months of school.
Sketchbooks for my students will aid them in building the confidence in their artistic skills!
