My students are creative and full of potential. There are 5 sections of Art 1 students that range in age from 9th to 12th graders. Some students are passionate artists in their own right, ready to take on new challenges and hone their skills, while most are reluctant artists who are just beginning to get their feet wet within the world of art. Regardless of artistic background or talent, all of my students are surprised to see how much they learn and improve throughout the year in art class.
My Project
This set of kraft sketchbooks will allow students to take ownership of their drawings and ideas. Students will be able to free draw, record important concepts, and brainstorm ideas before beginning art projects. Having their own sketchbooks will allow students to keep the flow of creative ideas and key concepts all in one location and it will allow them to look back on their progress and artistic journey throughout the semester.
Unfortunately, once students reach the high school age, their creativity has often been stifled.
Students have been taught that there is one correct answer, and that it is wrong to risk making something that is strange or unconventional. But when it comes to art, nothing could be further from the truth! To help combat these misconceptions, students need encouragement and hands-on learning tools to enable them to move through the creative space freely, without inhibitions. It helps students open up to creativity when they know that they own their own art, and that there ideas can be kept private. This sketchbook will become uniquely their own, a space where they may try new things, take risks, and truly understand what it means to be an artist through hands-on learning.
