My Students

I, along with another Art Teacher, are working tirelessly to create a successful Art Department. Through this successful Art Department our goal is to create a positive space to create art and for our students to express themselves. My students are going to school in SE DC, and daily many of them are overcoming many obstacles just to get to school. Our school is a low income school with the majority of the students below the poverty level. They reside in one of the wealthiest and historical cities in America, but unfortunately are sometimes not given the same tools to be successful as other schools/communities around the District.

Students at our school have the option to take Art 1, Art 2, and AP Art, and they LOVE art!

However, some of the students are not able to provide their own quality materials, and with our limited budget it is hard to provide materials for them.

My Project

I am asking for a class set of spiral bound sketchbooks for each of my students taking Art 1 and Art 2. My students will greatly benefit from their sketchbooks because they are able to treat them as personal journal and keep their drawings, thoughts, and Art research in one place. Sketchbooks are also beneficial for students to see their growth and reflect on past projects/ideas.

Sketchbooks also help Art Students identify and connect with the practices of professional artists.

With their sketchbooks they will become more organized, motivated and confident in their art making. Students can also use their sketchbooks when art field trips are taken.
