I teach over 600 students from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds, so they sometimes find that they have much to share with me and with one another. The art room is a place where they will find there isn't always a "right" answer. They are allowed to have an opinion and their voice matters! They are learning to illustrate their thoughts on paper.
I tell my students that art is a thought you can see.
I want each young artist to have a place to record their thoughts, keep ideas organized and see their progress. For this reason it is important that each student has a sketchbook to use.
My Project
Students spend a good deal of time trying to come up with the "right" answers. Art is an opportunity for them to show what they think and come up with answers of their own. Without this creative process, we cannot expect young people to excel or become leaders in our society.
In the famous words of Albert Einstein, "Creativity is more important than knowledge." Providing students with their own sketchbooks gives them a means to explore ideas and the vehicle to become adept at illustrating those ideas.
Our sketchbooks are used to practice drawing from life, for trying out different compositions and practicing techniques like shading and showing perspective. All of these skills enable to students illustrate ideas and communicate visually with others. Help these young artists show their creativity!
