I am a Visual Arts instructor at the Art and Music Academy which is part of the Bayard Rustin Learning Complex in Chelsea, NYC. Our school is a small learning community in a large school of about 2000 students. Our school is a Title 1 school, and approximately 65% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
One of my goals as an art instructor is to encourage meaningful learning for students so that they begin to create connections between art and their lives.
I'm constantly encouraging these connections. A large part of my curriculum has been devoted to projects that incorporate students' daily lives as New Yorkers and the visual arts. Curriculum in my class has focused on the NYC subway system, NYC cityscapes, and other relevant NYC exhibits such as the recent public event, "The Gates". I encouraging independent thinking and collaborative/active learning activities in the art room. Many of my art students respond to this instruction with enthusiasm.
I feel strongly that these students deserve a sketchbook so that they may have a record of their discoveries and visual investigations as they take my class. I recommend the purchasing of a book to all of my kids. Only about 20% of the class does actually purchase a sketchbook. The remainder of the kids use recycled paper stapled together. Although this is an efficient use of recycled paper, it is neither professional or organized. I believe this sends the wrong message about the importance of record keeping, visual investigation, and meaningful experiences in the arts.
For this reason, I am asking for the donation of 1 sketchbook for each child that I will be teaching in the Fall 2005 - Spring 2006 school year. I teach about 150 students per semester, so I am requesting the purchase of 300 sketchbooks.
