Sketchbooks Aren't Sketchy!

Help me give my students the gift of art. As an artist and teacher, I know how valuable the practice of keeping a sketchbook and journal. We all need time to reflect, write, draw and use our imagination.

My Students

I teach art to 500 Pre-Kindergarten through 5th graders in the middle of a large city. Our students are a highly diverse group of learners from 20 countries and speak 17 different languages. A quarter of our population is in temporary housing and the majority qualify for free lunch.

My students are amazingly creative, imaginative and innovative and I can't wait to support them as artists in my art room this year.

I know they would absolutely love a sketchbook of their own!

My Project

As an artist and an art teacher, I have kept sketchbooks and journals my entire life and I want my students to have the same opportunity. My students will use their sketchbooks to support and extend their lessons in the art room, but more importantly keeping a sketchbook will help them learn to think like artists. Having a quiet time and a safe space to draw, write, experiment, create and reflect is essential to their growth as artists and people.

With my support, they will integrate sketching and journaling into their daily lives both in school and at home.

Having a sketchbook will allow my students to grow rapidly as artists while supporting their literacy goals as well. This donation will benefit the entire school.

As their art teacher, I can't wait to see my students develop their own private world of imagination and creation in this safe space, and I know they will love to have a place to write, dream, draw and grow.
