Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Children are our number one priority and we believe in each and every one of them. As a bi-lingual community and a title one school, we are creating the future leaders and activists that have already experienced hardships at home at such a young age. Throughout the year, we explore multiple ways to create, inspire, promote self-expression and take risks.
I teach over 300+ artists that are eager to learn, explore + create in my art room.
I'll never get tired of seeing students experiment and take risks. For example, they realize that I'm not a magician – because when they mix yellow and blue, it does make green! They are tiny sponges that are taking SO many new experiences – I want to provide them even more.
My Project
I teach project-based art lessons to 1st-5th graders that provides a solid appreciation for the arts while integrating problem solving skills. Over the year, students learn about current artists, a variation materials and all sorts of new techniques. But these kids are in need of an additional outlet – a safe, personal place where they can express themselves without judgement. You see, many of my art students are dealing with obstacles at home and struggling in school. These two factors can impede on their mental health and will to learn. I'd like to get sketchbooks into the hands of some of my students so they can have a spot (SEL tool) to use self-expression, experiment, reflect or improve skills.
I will be attaching a tiered "reward" system for those who bring their sketchbooks to me regularly.
Think of the karate belt system...yellow belt, blue belt, black belt... for every 10 entries, I'll give them a ribbon to attach to their sketchbook. This system will give them the sense of accomplishment, status and much needed confidence while allowing them to grow as expressive artists.
