My students in Las Vegas, NV represent a wide variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is a public charter school that specializes in STEAM activities. My students love to be actively engaged in their learning and we do a lot of group work and projects. As a Science teacher with a BA in Theatre I love connecting Science and the Arts and try to find as many activities as possible to use them in conjunction.
I am a first year teacher that wants my students to have the resources to be creative and engaged!
My Project
Science concepts can be very difficult for students to grasp. One of my favorite activities to do with students after teaching a difficult topic is to challenge them to find metaphors that help them to understand and remember the difficult material.
This method uses multiple learning styles to help all students achieve understanding!
After they have found their metaphors we break out the easels, big sketch pads, and markers to draw the metaphors that help us relate those complicated science concepts. We can then post the students pictures around the room as we continue to explore these concepts. This also helps to provide great reviews before testing the students on the material. Having these new sketch pads and markers will help us continue to complete activities like this.
