Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine being in third grade and knowing that there's stuff inside you holding you up and keeping your back straight but you have no idea what it actually looks like except for what you've seen in pictures and on videos. Now imagine how cool it would be to be able to touch, move and examine a life-sized skeleton!

My third grade students are from low-income homes and for most of them, English is their second language. A great deal of their learning and understanding comes from hands-on instruction and experiences. Part of the third grade science curriculum in North Carolina is forming an understanding of the skeletal system. However, we are provided very few resources with which to teach this part of the curriculum.

Having a life-sized skeleton in the classroom will allow my students to literally take learning into their hands as they examine, label and discuss the skeletal system. They will be able to see "inside" themselves and compare how they "measure up" to our model. Another helpful resource for this unit will be a class set of Magic School Bus: The Search for the Missing Bones. Each quarter, my students and I embark on a journey through a chapter book. Mrs. Frizzle and the Magic School Bus will provide a fun way for all of us to explore the human body and improve our reading skills!

By providing these materials, you are ensuring that my students will have the opportunity to learn more about the skeletal system than they can from a book or worksheet. You will be giving them the chance to interact with what's inside them!
