This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students that make up our school population are awesome individuals with unlimited potential! There are over 1,100 students, of which over 85% are minorities. We are a Title I school, and our students come from incredibly diverse families and communities. Many of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches, are overcoming challenges at home, and struggle to have the supplies they need to be successful at school. However, despite this, they come ready and willing to work and create a positive learning environment.

My Project

Who doesn't want to be validated for doing the right things? Our high school was one of the first high schools in our district to implement the Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS). This year we want to bring together two different concepts. We want to reward students for behaving well and at the same time teach them basic math skills. Throughout the year students will receive an opportunity to earn "Bulldog Bucks" which they will be able to use to purchase items from our student-run "popup shop" in addition the students will learn how to budget, inventory, price, advertise, sell, communicate and relate to their customers, and everything else that comes along with running a store. In addition to this, because the store runs on school created money instead of actual dollars, the shop provides the students with a way to see their good behavior rewarded and enforced. While there are fun items for sale, there are also basic school supplies and things that will help students in their day to day life.
