Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

"Miss, these books are whack!" As a 9th grade English teacher, I hear my kids say things like this every day during independent reading. It's not that they don't like to read, because if they have the right book in their hands, they truly do love it. However, our school does not have a library, and the books we do have in the classroom are outdated and uninteresting to my students. We have literally no contemporary books in our school. My 9th grade "reluctant readers" from New York simply turn up their noses at the 'classics' on our shelves, such as "Little Women" and "Anna Karenina." Teaching reading at a school with a population of over 80% boys is almost impossible without books that will capture their attention. I am aiming to improve student reading levels before they take the SATs and state tests in the 11th grade. Right now, students are an average of three years behind in their reading levels. Without improving their reading levels, their chances of being successful in college are slim. My students will find a book or two that they like, but once they have finished reading those books, its a whole new struggle to capture their attention with something they can enjoy. Books in a series are a great solution, since they will have a new installment to look forward to and the the pages will start flying. Please help my students realize that there is a whole world of novels and literature out there that they will love to read. Help me get them ready for college. Help me instill a lifelong love of reading and give them a chance to be the rock star readers they long to be.
