My Students

"Oh, you teach in the town with the Federal Prison," is the sympathetic reply I get from others when they ask where I teach. We have ninety-six percent students on free or reduced lunch, and the main source of employment for parents is a local prison. Some families even move here to be close to family that may be incarcerated here. Regardless of what our parents do, we teach our students they are unique, gifted, and we enable them to make wise choices. It's true, our school has fewer opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, and the only local park is in the same lot as the local prison! Our students have higher poverty rates and we are somewhat behind wealthier areas in our district. Our scholars have capabilities to thrive as high as their peers in communities near us, but we can't help but think what other schools with more resources are doing. The only difference is resources!

My Project

"Oh, you teach in the town with the Federal Prison," is the sympathetic reply I get when people ask where I teach. We have 96% students on free lunch, and the main source of employment for parents is our prison. Families even move here to be close to family that may be incarcerated here. Regardless, we teach our students they are valued, and enable them to make wise choices. Our school has fewer opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities, and the only local park is in the same lot as the local prison. Our poverty rate is soaring, and we’re behind wealthier areas in our district, but our scholars’ capabilities to thrive could be endless with resources!

Teaching Science and Reading to low-income students in a huge urban district isn't always easy, but my students have come up with an innovative idea that replicatable, would better motivate us, help us believe we can accomplish anything wealthier schools can, and unite us in an amazing learning environment.

We want to tell stories through videotapes we self-create from our reading and creative writing, but also from experiments. We want to play these for the school to encourage everyone to learn and to be their own stars! We need tablets and a mini-projector to display our dazzling digitalized stories, Science Lab Electronics kits, circuits, dc motors/propellers for experiments, hat props for dramatization, and a screen for displaying our scientifically sizzling stories we video, edit and playback. Through experiments, video-taping, creative writing, and editing videos we’ll produce educational and fun digitalized stories featuring the true storytelling sensations---themselves!

We want to snap and sing and swing videos into fabulous presentations that exude pride! Imagine creating masterpieces instead of simply journaling! Please help me push my scholars to a scientific, theatrical, animated and digitalized storytelling world.
