Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the privilege of working with 130 seventh graders as they navigate the awkward years of middle school. From ages 12 - 16, the students you are choosing to help are full of an unyielding optimism for their future. Over 90% of these incredible students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and face so many other obstacles in their lives.
Despite the barriers these students may face, they work hard to embrace the nature of scientific inquiry.
These students are going through what can often be one of the most emotional and difficult times in their lives and deserve the same opportunities as their peers.
My Project
When students enter a classroom, especially a science classrom, the last thing they should be worried about is a chair breaking! Our students deserve so much more and these stools and cushions provide students with some flexibility in seating which I not only feel passionate about but is also supported by decades of research.
Many of our current chairs are uncomfortable and break easily.
This is simply unacceptable, and there must be viable seating alternatives. This will likely take multiple projects to full transform my classroom, but it is worth it to create a more inviting and engaging physical space.
