This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm so happy my 6th grade students are falling in love with reading! The books are literally flying off the bookshelves everyday! The only problem is there are not enough books for all these students. We need a variety of books to meet the interests and needs of all 150 students who love to read!
My students are from an inner city school in Illinois.
The majority of students are reading below grade level. Unfortunately, many of the students come from homes without any books. They lack the necessary resources like books to practice their reading skills. As their reading teacher, I'm working diligently to get as many books in their hands as possible. The students are becoming more and more interested in reading everyday. Their eyes light up when new books come into the classroom. Unfortunately, due to limited funding, not enough new books come into the classroom. The students need new books to meet their varying needs and interests.
My Project
My students are in need of interesting books that will inspire and motivate them to read. Graphic novels, biographies, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Friendship, sports, and entertainment are their top picks for reading this year. They need access to as many books as possible. They need to choose books which are interesting to them. The students will enjoy and participate in reading more when they have high interest books made available to them in their classrooms.
This project is so important since many students today struggle with reading.
There is so much technology out there which easily distracts them from sitting down with a good book. Students today are even more unmotivated to read when they don't have choice in choosing books to read. Students will be more motivated to read when they get to pick books of interest to them. It will help them become lifelong readers!
