Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their obstacles, I try to create fun and engaging hands-on science labs to have meaningful learning experiences.
Curious, enthusiastic, and creative; my students are eager to immerse themselves in learning all about science!
Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households, grandparents or extended family members and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. Even though they may have struggled at home, they are eager to learn and have the desire to succeed.
My Project
Unfortunately, many of my school resources were stored in my garage when Hurricane Harvey hit in the summer of 2017. Rising water flooded my garage which resulted in many items being ruined. Thankfully, I am slowly replacing items to bring the best hands-on labs back to the classroom and to my students.
Replacing my Science lab will help provide high-quality lab supplies that will not only give my students rigorous hands-on labs but will prepare them with the skills they need for postsecondary science.
Middle school is all about preparing our students for high school level labs with many different materials but it's difficult when you don't have the proper supplies to do it. I want to make it a priority to make sure my students have the necessary equipment to participate in Science lab stations and do hands-on experiments!
