Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a small neighborhood school with a dedicated staff and amazing students. Our students are diverse: GATE, AELs, and students with special needs are all represented in our population. Most receive free and reduced lunch.
Seven years ago, we became a Friends of Core Knowledge school and this past year we were recognized as a Core Knowledge School of Distinction.
Because of this enriching curriculum, students in my 6th grade class can be found contrasting socialism and capitalism, simulating the arrival of immigrants to Ellis Island or discussing classic novels such as The Prince and the Pauper or myths like The Iliad and The Odyssey. Our school was recently named a Gold Ribbon School by the California Department of Education.
My Project
Collaboration. Problem solving. Communication. These are three of the top skills employers look for in their candidates. In addition to teaching standards and content, it is imperative for teachers to design learning activities that support the development of such skills in order to prepare students for their future careers.
Utilizing Breakout EDU in the classroom not only gives students an engaging and interactive experience with content, but it also fosters the development of collaborative problem solving skills.
This kit will be used in my classroom to engage students with new content and to create culminating activities for previously learned material.
