My students need Go Math from Houghton Mufflin Harcourt. Go Math is a brand new, online, research-based math program that implements the current common core standards.
My typical classroom day consists of two math sessions. One session is to teach new math material and the other session is to review math material taught from the start of the school year. By the end of the year I have to have 90% of my students proficient in sixth grade math. This is a challenge.
My classroom is an incredible class consisting of 22 students from many different backgrounds.
13% of my students have learning disabilities. 27% of my students are ELL. 45% of my students are economically disadvantaged. Our elementary school is a wonderful school that has made a great deal of growth on our state standardized tests. In 2011-2012 we were second from the bottom out of 22 elementary school in the Utica Community Schools district. In 2012-2013 school year our school ranked 11th out of 22.
Our Building has made great gains and to help continue this upward climb, digital online programs like Go Math would really help.
My Project
The Go Math program has great online resources that can be accessed 24 hours a day for around-the-clock learning. Students will be assigned online homework. This not only saves paper but allows me to check the online completed assignments and provide instant feedback. The online program also has ELL support options. It also has real-world videos that students can watch to realize the importance of math. This awesome program will used whole and small group. Some students can be working on a new lesson, while other students are reworking a lesson from the reteach part of the program. The program is leveled and has a dashboard for all parties to use. I will run three stations during my two math sessions. One group will be working with me to learn a new strategy. Another group will be working on the Go Math website completing tasks using the new skill they just acquired. The final group will be doing a reteach activity. This is how the program will be used.
This project for Go Math will improve my classroom.
Since I desire to have my students get the best possible math instruction, Go Math can help me achieve this. Through this my students will learn to master the new common core math standards. This will help them in their future careers. Many of their lives will be improved as they achieve an education that will prepare them for college and careers that many of their families dream of them having.
