My students need books in multiples copies so we can have small group book clubs on their reading levels. These titles are above our grade level reading level, and will provide my students a challenge.
My school district is the 10th largest school district in the state of Pennsylvania. Due to economic status, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. In the last four years, five elementary and two high schools have closed.
Many of our students come from homes that are below the poverty rate.
Our classrooms lack basic supplies that are critical to the learning environment. Our students struggle with basic reading strategies and are below grade level. The provided reading materials are outdated, above their level, and black and white copies stapled together.
My Project
In our classroom, we have students reading from a kindergarten level to beginning fourth grade. It isn’t possible to have all the students reading out of one “basal reader” like in the past. It takes multiple copies of multiple levels to provide all students with appropriate reading material. It’s been through DonorsChoose, that I have been able to put accurate reading materials in my students' hands. I have witnessed a growth of each and every student!! I am so grateful for the many people, near and far, that have made a difference. However, we need new books! We can’t wait to begin reading, thanks to you!
