My students need these stools as those we were given through DonorsChoose have been extremely beneficial. Since my class is growing next year, I will need two more so all students have one.
All of my students have been identified as having an emotional/behavioral disorder, and all struggle to become functional learners. My primary goal is for them to learn how to function effectively in school and life beyond. However, I also want them to learn their basic academic skills so that, as they learn HOW to be a part of a school community, they have the basic skills to learn and progress there.
We have made LOTS of progress with numerous methods, and there's more we'd love to incorporate.
We use lots of Velcro! Visuals, schedules, choice boards, and so on empower them to make wise choices. We address sensory needs that are specific to each child, guiding them to determine and appropriately address those things that stand in the way of their performance and in simply having a calm, meaningful day. These children are precious, and, as they let us in to their hearts, the potential we see for them to have successful futures is abundantly clear. When they know we care, they let us in, and what we find makes us willing to do all we can, and then some, to grow their success.
My Project
Earlier this year I was thrilled to receive stools for my Special Needs class. As I had hoped, they have been far better than chairs in promoting focus and allowing for appropriate movement. They have also allowed for the room to be less cluttered, which has meant a safer space with less disruption. My class is growing next year, so we will need more stools so that all students have one for our lessons and activities.
We use a token economy in our classroom using "Thumbs Up Bucks" and a commerce system that teaches the students the value of working, budgeting, and saving.
This has been extremely effective, but we have struggled to keep the store stocked with items that motivate students. In fact, this token economy is actually part of the required interventions in most my students' IEPs. That is why we are asking for a package of items to begin with, which will allow us to keep the store stocked as we glean items from anywhere we can find them throughout the year.
