I am a third grade Chinese/English bilingual teacher teaching in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown. For all my students, English is their second language. They are either recent immigrants or have immigrant parents and do not speak English at home. I strive to provide many opportunities for my students to use their English through sharing and interactions together in school. As a teacher, I've learned to appreciate my student's differences and what they have to offer to the classroom. Especially teaching bilingual students, I need to provide them with various opportunities to speak and use their English. Knowing the needs of my students, I want to provide them with a more positive and comfortable learning environment where they are not afraid to make mistakes. Teaching 8-year olds, much of my teaching involves sitting together on the floor. I know my students would appreciate sitting comfortably while learning hands-on lessons, community building activities building trust, and small groups reading on the rug. Most importantly, it will be a fantastic place where I read to my students daily. I am asking for a United States Area rug for my classroom library so my students will benefit from learning about U.S. geography from coast-to-coast!
