“One thing's for sure. We're not gonna fit in, but we're gonna stand out" - Fish in a Tree
I teach English Language Arts to 6th graders at a Title I school in Arizona.
I have several students with IEPs and a few English Language Learners. One of my classes is made up of accelerated learners which consists of many students who are in the advanced learning program and are candidates for the honors program when they go into junior high next year. The reading ability with my students ranges from non-readers to highly engaged readers. I have students who are reading at a 2nd grade level and those that are reading at a college level, as well as anywhere in between.
My Project
We are a flexible seating classroom. Students have a variety of seating options, which include low tables, gaming chairs, bench seats and tall tables. Our tall tables are great for standing to do work or sitting on tall stools. We would like to have more tall stools in order for more students to have the option to sit at the tall tables. We recently received 6 bar stools and would like to add 4 additional stools, for a total of 10.
A flexible seating classroom provides student choice and leads to more focused learning.
Students in my classroom have the opportunity to sit where they feel they will do their best learning. I don't assign seats in my room, I encourage responsibility in making great choices to enhance student learning. I hold students accountable for their choices and that is one way that student engagement is obtained in my classroom.
Sitting at the tall tables is a popular option in my classroom and I would like to offer more students that opportunity. Donations to this project will help make that happen.
