Our class has been experimenting with flexible seating this year. The option to sit on the floor, a desk, a cubby, or on a pillow was a great way to start the year. We added laundry baskets and yoga mats, then we brought in bookshelves to stand up with. Our biggest problem is finding a seating choice that is comfortable for those for whom a traditional chair doesn't work. We are looking for seats allow us the flexibility to move around and allow us to be creative anywhere in the classroom.
Now we are finding that due to our seating preferences, we need wobbly chairs that will be comfortable for several students to work without being distracted by their body not feeling good in a normal chair.
These chairs can be flipped over to provide more wobble or more stability. They are also light and can be moved to any place in the classroom with ease. The more comfortable the students are, the more of their attention can be focused on the learned rather than how their bodies feel.
My Project
I have several students for whom flexible seating is a saving grace for their bodies. Currently, we have only one wobbly chair, and it gets passed around between many students. Even students for whom attention isn't an issue, the wobbly chair is comfortable for their bodies, and they gravitate towards it.
Right now, the wobbly chair is the most popular piece of furniture out of all my flexible seating options.
Having more wobbly chairs in the classroom would allow for more students to ignore their bodies and use all their effort to attend to their tasks in class.
This support would give us a boost in creativity and productivity. With all the projects were are tackling this year, we could use more of both to find success!
