My Students

I teach in an elementary school that includes Pre-K through 8th grade. We are a small school district with about 300 students. I teach social studies to 80 of those children in 6th through 8th grade. My students come from many different backgrounds with more than 75% receiving free and reduced lunch. Many of them come from single-parent households and struggle financially.

Each and every one of my students come to class with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

They really enjoy hands-on activities and moving about the classroom.

My Project

The desks are uncomfortable for many of my students. The futon and bean bag chairs will provide my students with different places to sit beside their desks. With this new furniture, students will be able to change their seating arrangements on a daily basis.

Sitting in a desk for almost two hours a day can be very uncomfortable.

You see, my students are in my classroom for double class periods. Sitting in a desk for that long can be very rigid for larger students, as well as students with attention problems. Flexible seating arrangements can eliminate issues before they arise. The beanbag chairs and futon will allow students to move, collaborate, and even separate themselves from others if need be.

By having flexible seating in the classroom my students will be free to choose which seating arrangement is best for them. This will allow them to stay focused, be comfortable, and get the most out of their learning.
