I am a new fourth grade Chinese/English bilingual teacher teaching in the heart of San Francisco's Chinatown. This is my first year teaching fourth grade, and it's been quite a big change because I was a kindergarten and second grade teacher prior. All my students do not speak English at home, and so the only place they are able to practice their English is at school. Knowing the needs of my students, I want to provide a positive and comfortable learning environment for them so that they will not be intimidated or scared to practice their English. Every day I am learning from my students, and a lesson that I am learning is that teaching 34 students while they're seated in their own seats is not working very effectively, especially for those who sit way in the back. I know that designating a rug area in my classroom will be beneficial to my students and the learning environment. So, I am asking for a classroom rug of the world. I need to teach my students about the world, so it will be great if the rug area is of the world! On the rug, we can do team building activities - building trust and working together. Most importantly, it will be a fantastic area where I can read stories to my students. I can already foresee the many lessons I can do with my students with the rug. For instance, if you needed to travel from France to Brazil, which modes of transportation would you use and why? Or today is Wednesday, so everyone can sit only on the bodies of water. Or before dismissing for recess I can say, those who are sitting on the Asian continent can line up first. The rug will be such a great addition to my students.
