These wonderful little people have taught me so much about laughter and forgiveness and the capacity to love, in spite of their seemingly insurmountable obstacles. They walk to school down one of the most dangerous, neglected and economically challenged areas in this city, often alone, or with siblings. Yet once they get to school they are full of smiles and they are excited to learn! Many of their families are struggling to meet their basic needs, yet they still show up each day. They are not only resilient, they are also kind, strong, funny and smart! They are counting on me to give them what they need to be successful.
My Project
In the interest of rigorous instruction and college preparedness, we are pushing our youngest learners to do things their bodies aren’t meant to do. Kindergarten is a full day with no nap, limited outdoor time and dwindling time for exploration and play. By providing them with different sensory experiences and seating options created for busy bodies, we can, at the very least, make a classroom built with their needs in mind. It is my hope that flexible seating will not only help them feel comfortable, but also more stimulated, focused and ready to take on the world. Someone once told me “Those who need the most, deserve the best”, and it has always been my goal to do everything in my power to make that happen.
