Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing. They come to 2 different levels of engineering classes. They are required to complete an EPICS (community-based) project as part of the curriculum.
As this is our first year, we decided to start out helping our school community before we branch out to the community at large.
My students are chomping at the bit to get this project started. They love the idea that they can help others. This is just the beginning of great things to come from them.
My students will learn the value of teamwork, a skill that will serve them well in whatever direction their life takes them. That includes high school, college, work, and relationships.
They will also learn that real-life problem-solving is a process that can't be circumvented.
They will also learn about time management to see this project through to its successful conclusion.
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to be able to obtain engineering design to give us the opportunity to acquire a permit for The City Of Phoenix which, will allow us to fabricate a greenhouse to benefit our school community with organic fruits and vegetables. These essential fruits and vegetables will help us get the necessary nutrients required for us to learn and gain knowledge. Knowledge is required to better prepare ourselves for the future. In order to accomplish this, we need to have a Wall/Fence to keep the community at large out. This will allow us to have fresh vegetables to distribute to our less fortunate student's families. Additionally, we could use the excess into food we serve our students, therefore becoming more self-sufficient.
We plan on making this project happen by having the students and our peers play a vital role in this project. Everyone will be directed and assigned to a certain task, this gives everyone the chance to participate. Some tasks may have more than one person working on it, but there will be a leader assigned to supervise. However, our teacher - Mr. B. - will be the one in charge. Overall we'll follow under his directions but, we'll be independent enough to work. Without constant nudging and nagging.
This project gives us the opportunity to give back to our community. Our school has lead us throughout the years and has done a lot for us and doing this will be good for our school community. We will be working on a garden that the fruits and vegetables will be used to give us meals. Rather than the school paying every day for vegetables to feed us, we would like to do our part in helping out. Not only will this help our school economically but will help us in being healthy with organic fruits and vegetables.
