Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are survivors. This is my second year at this school and that is the best word to use when describing them. They come hungry, frustrated and angry; yet they still give me everything they have!
Our school has the second highest homeless and foster population in our county.
That does not stop us, the teachers and students, from being believers in ourselves and others. The teachers at my school have many opportunities to go to schools with a much easier demographic, but the strive to become better keeps us all there.
The students are bussed from the one of the largest Section 8 housing unit in our town. It takes four buses to bring the students to school, we are not a neighborhood school. The students get on the bus at 6:45 am and are dropped off by 7:30 am to go eat breakfast. All students get free lunch and breakfast because of our demographics. I strive to give as many students as possible a hands on learning experience that includes projects and field trips. Thank you for joining me on this adventure!
My Project
This sofa will be the "it" spot in our classroom to read! I have an amazing classroom library without a place that motivates students to dive into a good book. We have the perfect window to put this under. Your support will show them that hard work pays off!
My class has read 3,695,346 words this school; they've earned this!
There are four classes in fifth grade, and we are in first place,; they set this goal on their own. I have a few students who have scored 100% on all of their reading quizzes, which means close to 20 chapter books. Fifteen students have raised their reading/comprehension level a grade level or more.
They are self motivated to do well in school. We have toured a university, and many of the students and I met up at our local junior college to support their sports teams. I cannot be more proud of them.
